Swim Lesson Levels

ANGELFISH:
Prerequisite / Description:
For children 6 months to 18 months who will be accompanied by a parent(s) or other adult in the water. Fun, water adjustment and basic skill development are emphasized as the instructor guides parents and children through this level.
Skills taught at this level:
• Enter and exit pool                        • Holding positions
• Water toys                                    • Surface bobbing
• “Monkey grip” on side                   • Kicking
• Head up front float                        • Assisted back float
• Blow bubbles                                • Face in water
• Bobbing                                        • Head up front glide
• Assisted back glide                      • Underwater exploration
• Arm movement – “reach & pull”   • Assisted position change
• Parent safety skills
Advancement Skills:
  1. Age 18 months or older

 
STARFISH:
Prerequisite / Description:
For children 18 months to 3 years who will be accompanied by a parent(s) or other adult in the water. Fun, water adjustment and basic skill development are emphasized as the instructor guides parents and children through this level.

GOLDFISH:
Description:
Water adjustment for the non-swimmer, ages 3-5 years.
Skills taught at this level:
• Safely entering and exiting the pool      • Introduction to flutter kick
• Shallow water adjustment                     • Blow bubbles–5 count
• Put face in water                                   • Assisted front float
• Assisted back float                                • Use of P.F.D.–lifejacket
• Assisted back glide with equipment      • Assisted back glide with equipment & kick
• Assisted front glide with equipment      • Assisted front glide with equipment & kick
• Assisted jump into shallow water
Advancement Skills:
1. Put entire face in the water
2. Blow bubbles–5 count

PENGUIN:
Description:
For the non-swimmer. This class provides water adjustment activities, front and back floats and glides, and kickboard skills.
Skills taught at this level:
• Holding breath: pre-school 5-count, youth 10-count
• Bobbing: pre-school 5 bobs, youth 10 bobs  
• Shallow water adjustment
• Water adjustment: entries, exits, open eyes, ears wet, bubble blowing
• Front float and recovery: preschool 5-count, youth 10-count
• Front glide          • Front glide with kick: pre-school 5 feet, youth 10 feet
• Introduction to front crawl
Advancement Skills:
1. Front glide with kick: pre-school 5 feet, youth 10 feet
2. Unassisted back float

OTTER:
Prerequisite:
Must be comfortable in the water. Must be able to front glide with kick, pre-school 5 feet, youth 10 feet and unassisted back float.
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Penguin
• Back glide with kick: pre-school 5 feet, youth 10 feet
• Jump into chest-deep water unassisted
• Front crawl without breathing: pre-school 10 feet, youth 15 feet
• Assisted to unassisted rollover        • Arm/leg extension assist
• Bobbing to safety (site specific)       • Side breathing on the wall
• Back float and recovery                    • Back glide
• P.F.D. – jump in, assisted rollover    • Buddy system
• Underwater exploration                      • Introduction to back crawl
Advancement Skills:
1. Back glide with kick: pre-school 5 feet, youth 10 feet

SEAL:
Prerequisite:
Must be able to do front crawl without breathing: pre-school 10 feet, youth 15 feet. Must be able to back glide with kick unassisted: pre-school 5 feet, youth 10 feet.
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Otter
• Introduction to front crawl with side-breathing
• Front crawl with breathing: pre-school 20 feet youth 30 feet
• Back crawl: pre-school 20 feet, youth 30 feet
• Hazards in other aquatic environments–rivers, lakes
• Turning over front to back, back to front
• Safety skills                                  • Deep water adjustment
• Underwater exploration                • Changing directions
• Finning and flutter kick on back   • Introduction to diving/diving safety
Advancement Skills:
1. Front crawl with breathing: pre-school 20 feet, youth 30 feet
2. Back crawl: pre-school 20 feet, youth 30 feet

POLAR BEAR:
Prerequisite:
Must be able to swim front crawl with breathing: pre-school 20 feet, youth 30 feet.
Must be able to swim back crawl: pre-school 20 feet, youth 30 feet
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Seal
• Front crawl with breathing for 50 ft.
• Jump into deep water and level off
• Intro to elementary backstroke
• Deep water reach & throw assists
• Hazards in aquatics environments–oceans, beaches
• Drugs/alcohol in an aquatic environment
• Back crawl for 50 feet                     • Underwater exploration
• P.F.D. in deep water — H.E.L.P., huddle positions and cramp release
• Intro to breaststroke kick                 • Intro to treading water
• Basic boating safety                        • Diving–knee dive to standing dive
• Improve finning and flutter               • Feet-first surface dive
• Change direction in deep water
Advancement Skills:
1. Front crawl with breathing: 50 feet
2. Back crawl: 50 feet

SEA LION:
Prerequisite:
Must be able to swim front crawl with breathing for 50 feet, and back crawl for 50 feet.
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Polar Bear
• Tread in deep water, 30 seconds      • Standing dive to long shallow dive
• Open turns, front and back
• Underwater swim — 4 body lengths pick up diving rings
• PFD: jump into deep water, swim 45 ft.  • Sculling on back with flutter kick
• Breaststroke kick review and introduction of breaststroke
• Bobbing in deep water                            • Jellyfish float
• Improve front crawl                                 • Elementary backstroke
• Rescue breathing                                   • Back crawl
• Personal Safety: hypothermia
Advancement Skills:
1. Front crawl — 25 yards
2. Back crawl — 25 yards
3. Elementary backstroke — 25 yards

PIRANHA:
Prerequisite:
Must complete Sea Lion skills or equivalent.
Skills taught at this level:
• Starts–long shallow dive, racing starts
• Turns–open turns, flip turns–front and back
• Introduce and improve butterfly      • Introduce and improve breaststroke
• Swimming stretches                      • Endurance work
• Stroke drills                                    • Improve front and back crawl
• Bilateral breathing/front crawl
Advancement Skills:
1. Racing starts – front and back
2. 50 yards – front crawl with turn
3. 25 yards – back crawl

DOLPHIN:
Prerequisite:
Must be able to swim front crawl (25 yards), back crawl (25 yards) and elementary backstroke (25 yards).
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Sea Lion 
• Tread water 1 minute, intro egg-beater kick
• Pick up object from the deep end of pool
• PFD: put lifejacket on treading in deep water
• 5 minute continuous swim using front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke
• Safety medley: head-up crawl 50 feet, recover object at 8 feet, tread water for 30 seconds
• Breaststroke                                          • Jellyfish float
• Sculling on back                                    • Intro of scissor kick
• Intro of butterfly kick                               • CPR demonstration
• Daily underwater swim for distance      • Head first– tuck surface dive
Advancement Skills:
1. Elementary backstroke — 50 yards
2. Dive in, swim front crawl for — 50 yards
3. Breaststroke — 50 yards
4. Back crawl — 50 yards

PARK SHARK I:
Prerequisite:
Must be able to dive-in and swim 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Must be able to swim 50 yards of breaststroke.
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Dolphin
• Head first surface dives (pike and tuck)
• Deep water bobs (feet-first surface dives)
• Compact jump with rescue tube         • Flip turns–front and back
• Personal safety (heat exhaustion, sunburn, etc.)
• 10 minute swim using all strokes except butterfly
• 100 yard Individual Medley                  • Sculling
• Review open turns
• Basic rescues with tube (front drive, rear huggie)
• Introduction to butterfly                       • Disrobing in the water
• Improve egg-beater kick                     • Brick tread
Review:
Extension & throwing assists, diving safety, drugs and alcohol around water
Advancement Skills:
1. Breaststroke 50 yards, backcrawl 50 yards, sidestroke 50 yards and front crawl 50 yards
2. Pike or tuck surface dive to 8 feet, underwater swim for 20 feet, surface and tread water for 5 minutes

PARK SHARK II:
Prerequisite:
Must be able to dive-in and swim 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl and sidestroke, and breaststroke.
Must be able to execute a pike or tuck surface dive to 8 feet, swim underwater 20 feet, surface and tread water for 5 minutes.
Skills taught at this level:
• Review Advancement Skills for Park Shark
• Surface dives (pike, tuck, feet first—retrieve brick from 8 feet)
• Compact jump with rescue tube, swim 25 yards with rescue tube using approach stroke
• Improve flip turns–front and back
• Personal safety (barriers and bloodborne pathogens)
• 500 yard swim using all strokes except butterfly
• 200 yard Individual Medley                        • Butterfly
• Review basic rescues with tube (front drive, rear huggie)
• Jellyfish fl oat for 5 minutes                       • Tread water for 3 minutes
• Egg-beater kick for 25 feet                        • Brick tread for 1 minute
• Personal fitness (heart rate and lap swim etiquette)
• Underwater swim for 20 feet
Advancement Skills:
1. Swim 100 yards each of: Breaststroke, backcrawl, sidestroke, and front crawl.
2. Long shallow dive, swim 100 yard Individual Medley.
3. Compact jump and approach stroke 10 yards with rescue tube.
